A rare pink diamond has been found in a mine in the Central African country of Angola. An Australian mine operator reported this information on Wednesday. The company engaged in the extraction of mineral resources in the mine where the diamond was found.
In a statement to investors, Lucapa Diamond Company said this is the largest piece of the rare 'pink' diamond found in any mine in the world in the last 300 years. The piece of diamond found in a mine in Angola has been named 'The Lulo Rose'. Its weight is 170 carats. It was found in the Lulo mine in the diamond-rich northeast of the country.
The discovery of a Type IIA diamond (one of the rarest and purest of natural stones) is considered a sensational event. The Angolan government congratulated the miners for finding it. Lucapa Diamond Company is working jointly with the country's government in this mine.
Angola's Minister of Mineral Resources, Diamantino Azevedo, said the discovery of the spectacular pink diamond at the Lulo mine has made Angola an important country on the world stage.
It is reported that the diamond will be sold through an international auction at a record price. However, the diamond needs to be cut and polished to fetch a good price at auction. It can lose about 50 percent of its weight during this process.
Such pink diamonds have sold for record prices in the past. In 2017, a 59.6-carat 'Pink Star' diamond sold for US$71.2 million at an auction in Hong Kong. It is the most expensive pink diamond ever sold in the world.
