Guriev is the former vice chairman of Foss Agro Company. Phos Agro Company is a major supplier to the global fertilizer market. The US has imposed economic sanctions on him and his son. Under this, any US business organization including branches of various banks located in the United States will not be able to do business with them. Their assets will be seized under US jurisdiction.

The U.S. Treasury Department has added the 81-meter (267-foot) yacht Alpha Nero, based in the Caribbean Islands of Guryev, to the blacklist. Due to this ban, there is a risk of confiscation of luxury goods.


However, the US Treasury Department says the Alpha Nero probe's location-detecting hardware has been turned off to avoid the risk of seizure. The US Treasury has also sanctioned former Olympic gymnast Alina Kabaeva. She is called Putin's lover. In addition, sanctions have also been imposed against Natalia Popova, the wife of Kirill Dmitriev, the manager of the Russian government's investment fund.

According to the US Treasury Department, Popova worked for the technology company Innopraktika. One of Putin's daughters runs the company. "While innocent people suffer because of Russia's illegal aggression, Putin's allies are enriching themselves and funding lavish lifestyles," Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement.

The US has also targeted one of Russia's biggest taxpayers, Viktor Filipovich, and two subsidiaries of steel company MMK, which he owns.

Along with the Treasury Department, the US State Department has also imposed several sanctions, including visa bans, on several Russian businessmen. In addition, about 900 Russian officials have been placed on the US visa ban list.
